Anger continues to grow against cruise ships, which are accused of polluting. Under pressure, the sector is trying to change its image. A zero-particle ferry was unveiled in Marseille on Monday September 5. The particulate filter system is presented as a world first.

It may be the ferry of the future. The promise is strong, even revolutionary. The boat will emit zero polluting particles during its journey between Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) and Bastia (Haute-Corse). “We can talk about zero smoke. Visually, we have nothing at all coming out and in reality we just capture even the nano-particles actually contained in the exhaust soot”explains Christophe Ceguinot, technical director.

It’s the black smoke and the smell of sulfur that have been poisoning the lives of the people of Marseille for years. Cruise lines and ferries are in the crosshairs. For environmental associations, the device must be generalized as soon as possible. It is a unique pollution control technique that has been implemented on the boat. Sulfur and fine particles escaping from the engine are first neutralized with sodium bicarbonate and then filtered. The solid waste then ends up in recycling tanks. There is therefore no longer any atmospheric emission and sulfur waste discharged into the sea.
