The British singer was chosen alongside Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction on the British show The X Factor in 2010. After a few years of phenomenal success, he shocked fans in March 2015 announcing his departure from the band, with the remaining four members going on “an indefinite hiatus” the following year.

In his first interview in six years, the 30-year-old star confessed to leaving the band because he felt like “something was going on” behind his back and wanted to be the first one out. solo music.

“I don’t want to go into too much detail, but there was a lot of politics. Some people were doing certain things, some people didn’t want to sign contracts, so I knew something was going on, so I just got a little ahead of the trend… I was like, “I’m just going to leave from here I think it’s over,'” he shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday (July 12, 23).

He added: “There were obviously underlying issues in our friendships too. We had been together every day for five years, and we were sick of each other, to be completely honest. »

The singer of Pillowtalk, who launched his solo career in 2016, noted that the band members were “close” and had “a great time” together, but that One Direction had simply run its course. “I look back on it now with much more fondness than I would have (when) I had just left,” he said.
