In Zaporizhia in southeastern Ukraine, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant came under fire from the Russian army on Friday March 4. Several facilities were affected, a fire took place. The plant’s spokesman, Andriy Tuz, makes an urgent appeal, asking “stopping heavy weapon strikes” on the site. Blocked for long minutes by Russian forces, Ukrainian firefighters tried to put out the blaze.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is concerned about this alarming situation. “Only immediate European action can stop the Russian troops. We must prevent Europe from dying of a nuclear disaster”, he says. The fire was brought under control in the morning, none of the six reactors is affected. Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi assures that there has been no “no release of radioactive material”. For their part, the Russians claim that the Ukrainians themselves set fire to the plant.
