Yvan Colonna’s murderer “wanted to pay for someone famous”, says the director of Arles prison

How did Yvan Colonna die? The murderer of the Corsican separatist “wanted to pay someone famous”estimated, Wednesday March 30, Marc Ollier, the head of the prison of Arles (Gard), where the activist was murdered. Before the law commission of the National Assembly, the head of the prison establishment said that he did not believe in the explanation of a “blasphemy” uttered by the Corsican prisoner.

“Until March 2, none of you had heard of it. What could he do to be known and not be the little unknown jihadist among X in France? Attack (…) who, if not the best known on prison, Yvan Colonna”did he declare.

“It’s my feeling, it’s my impression, I have no proof”, added the one who took office on March 1, the day before the violent attack on Yvan Colonna, who was serving a life sentence for the assassination of the prefect Claude Erignac in 1998 in Ajaccio. Falling into a coma after his attack, Yvan Colonna died on March 21.

His murderer, Franck Elong Abe, 36, told investigators he assaulted Yvan Colonna in the prison gym “to retaliate against him who has blasphemed”. “It doesn’t seem very credible to me. He was someone who was very open with Muslim prisoners, even those who did not share the same opinions as him”assured Marc Ollier.

The head of establishment said he was very moved since watching the attack, filmed by surveillance cameras. Yvan Colonna who was lying doing push-ups “couldn’t defend himself”. Questioned by the deputies, he denied that certain detainees had heard “cries”mentioning only “little noises like someone panting while exercising”.
