Yulia Navalnaïa postpones her visit to Ottawa

A transport problem forces the cancellation of the meeting planned for Tuesday between the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and Yulia Navalnaïa, the widow of former Russian political opponent Alexeï Navalny.

Mme Navalnaïa was welcomed to Ottawa in her capacity as chair of the advisory board of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. His meeting with the Prime Minister was to take place at 3 p.m. in the Canadian capital.

The office of Federal Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly confirms that the visit has only been postponed to a later date. New sanctions against Russia will still be announced on Tuesday.

Alexei Navalny was considered one of the main political opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He died in February in custody.

Activists against Russia’s bellicose actions in Ukraine then displayed his portrait and placed flowers in his memory in an Ottawa park, very close to the Russian embassy. His widow, Yulia Navalnaïa, promised to continue her work.

More details will follow.
