The Georgian Parliament recently passed a hotly contested bill on foreign influence. A reform denounced by young people, very critical of Russia and who aspire to integration into the European Union.
A fight for European values and a refusal of Russian influence. At 21, Tekla Jailava mobilizes every week to denounce a Georgian bill on foreign influence. The latter is described as “pro-Russian” by his opponents. The student, also a waitress in a restaurant, links this movement to the European goals expressed by young people. “Since my childhood, we have always been focused on Europe in all areas”explains the young woman.
Despite the mobilization, the Georgian Parliament adopted the bill thanks to the votes of conservatives. A failure for the country’s president Salomé Zourabichvili, in favor of rapprochement with Europe. In December 2023, the former Soviet nation was granted candidate status for entry into the European Union. The demonstrators therefore want to continue their mobilization, despite the parliamentary setback. To do this, they continue to gather in Tbilisi, the capital.
