The collective and label Montrealer Moonshine presents the first microalbum of the composer NegoO who, at only 21 years old, impresses with his vision of the batida sound, an amalgam of different rhythms from Africa (Angolan kuduro is the main ingredient) from the Lisbon underground electronic scene. In the hands of NegoO, these groovesusually intense, sharp and jerky, take on a completely different tone, clearly softer. The piano motif that follows the rhythm of Raising in the opening, its diaphanous orchestrations of synths, express a melancholy rarely heard in the batida; even more unheard, You are Banzelar even resembles an electronic version of the Cape Verdean morna. The tempo speeds up a bit on Lost in Paristhe polyrhythms in the foreground and a synth motif that swirls above. Skillfully executed, NegoO stands out as a nuanced composer who imagines the genre outside of the dance floor.
