“Your battle is our battle,” Trudeau tells Zelensky

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Ukraine alongside several heads of state, including Volodymyr Zelensky, to commemorate two years since the Russian invasion.

“Your battle is our battle. You are fighting for your sovereignty, for your territory, for your language, for your culture, for your democracy, but also for our democracy,” the Canadian Prime Minister underlined at Hostomel.

The small town on the outskirts of Kyiv was the scene of a battle between Russian and Ukrainian forces, while control of an air base represented the main objective of Vladimir Putin’s army.

The President of the European Commission, the Italian Prime Minister and the Belgian Prime Minister accompanied the Canadian and Ukrainian heads of state.

“With an ingenuity and tenacity that showed the whole world what Ukrainians are capable of. As I said when I addressed the Verkhovna Rada last June, you are the spearhead that will determine the course of the 21st century,” added Mr. Trudeau.

The politician signed a bilateral security agreement, in addition to announcing the sending of approximately $3.02 billion in financial and military aid to Kyiv in 2024, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The presence of Western leaders in the Ukrainian capital to show their support does not mask this state of affairs: American aid is blocked by the Republican rivals of Democratic President Joe Biden, and that of the Europeans has fallen behind schedule.

For its part, the Trudeau government has promised to send 800 surveillance drones to Ukraine by the end of spring before its visit to Ukraine.
