The government, associated with 150 top athletes, is mobilizing in schools to encourage young people to do 30 minutes of activity a day. A new study reveals disturbing results.

30 minutes of sport a day when you’re young, that doesn’t seem like much. However, according to a study, young people aged 11 to 17 are less and less physically active. “We know that today, two out of three young people spend more than two hours a day in front of screens, and less than an hour a day playing sports”, details Dr. Damien Mascret, doctor and journalist for France Télévisions. As a result, young people run less and less quickly. Between the ages of 10 and 12, they achieve performances equivalent to those of a 65-year-old person who does not play sports.

Increase in overweight and obesity

This results in an increase in overweight and obesity. The trend is particularly on the rise for boys, among teenagers. In girls, the dynamics of increase begin from the age of 11. “If a child aged 11 to 14 is obese, he has a 55% chance of still being obese in adolescence. And if a teenager is obese, there is an 80% chance that he will be an obese adult”, says Damien Mascret. To reverse the trend, Professor François Carré, who supervised the study, recommends in particular split training.
