The Montreal Canadiens have decided to entrust the leadership of the team to Nick Suzuki. The 23-year-old forward is the new captain of the Montreal Canadiens.
He becomes the 31st captain in team history and also the youngest. He will be supported by Brendan Gallagher and Joel Edmundson as assistants. He succeeds Shea Weber.
Coach Martin St-Louis made the announcement Monday morning as part of the team’s annual golf tournament at the Laval-sur-le-Lac golf club.
“It’s an honor to become captain of the Canadiens,” he said from the outset. He believes that this appointment demonstrates the confidence and respect of the team’s management.
Suzuki, entering his fourth season with the Canadiens, enters the first season of an eight-year contract he signed in October 2021. He was the team’s leading scorer last season with 21 goals and 61 points in 82 games.
In 209 NHL games, he scored 49 goals and added 94 assists, for a total of 143 points.
A first-round draft pick (13th overall) by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, Suzuki joined the Canadiens along with Tomas Tatar and a draft pick in return for Max Pacioretty on September 10, 2018.
