“Young and Foolish”, Café Zimmermann

We don’t seem to be straying from the subject this summer, but even (or especially) after having looked at the 24e Concerto by Mozart with Elisabeth Pion then on the Concertos nbone 25 And 27 With Robert Levin, it was impossible not to linger over this refreshing Young and Foolish from the Café Zimmermann ensemble, which includes a 17e Concerto by Alexander Melnikov on a copy of an Anton Walter from 1795, copy by Christoph Kern (2007). Same model, therefore, as for Levin, for a firmer sound and less “copy of something that would sound old with patina”. Suddenly, Melnikov fires everything with humor and verve, ornamenting everything with intelligence. Marvelous idea, the coupling is the original and twirling Concerto for harpsichord and pianoforte by CPE Bach, perfectly balanced between the soloists playing two Kern instruments. The Symphony Wq. 183/1 of Bach and the Entertainment K. 138 Mozart’s performances by the always excellent Café Zimmermann provide symphonic counterpoints and keep this musical fireworks going.
