Youcef Attal suspended 7 matches after his publication on the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Montpellier-Clermont to be replayed

The LFP disciplinary committee has decided to heavily suspend Nice’s Youcef Attal. She also took a point away from MHSC, which will have to replay its Ligue 1 match against Clermont behind closed doors, interrupted after a firecracker was thrown.

The disciplinary committee knew it was being scrutinized, and it hit hard. The body of the Professional Football League (LFP) had two major cases to judge on Wednesday October 25. First: the case of Youcef Attal. The Algerian defender from OGC Nice shared a video on Instagram calling for “a dark day for the Jews”on October 14.

“I am aware that my publication shocked several people, which was not my intention, and I apologize for that”the player subsequently apologized, adding that he “strongly condemns all forms of violence, anywhere in the world”. But his excuses were not enough in the eyes of the disciplinary committee, which imposed a firm suspension of seven matches. However, this will only take effect after the next day of Ligue 1, i.e. from Tuesday October 31.

A point withdrawn in Montpellier

Another expected decision: that concerning the fate of the Montpellier-Clermont match, during the 8th day of Ligue 1, on October 8. Interrupted in the 91st minute following a firecracker thrown towards the Clermont goalkeeper, Mory Diaw, the match did not resume while the MHSC led 4 goals to 2. Finally, the match will be replayed, behind closed doors.

The LFP disciplinary committee also imposed the withdrawal of a firm point in Montpellier, and another suspended sentence, as well as the partial closure of the Etang de Thau stand – where the firecracker had started – for two matches. A gesture from which the Montpellier ultras had dissociated themselves in a press release, regretting this gesture committed “by an ordinary person, who is not a member of their association.”
