La Nupes seems not to fail to achieve consensus around its pronunciation. A question perhaps not so trivial as that.
Definitely the name of the new left coalition (Nupes) for the next legislative elections, does not manage to achieve consensus around its pronunciation. Julien Bayou himself, national secretary of Europe Ecologie Les Verts, used different ones when he was questioned on Friday May 20 on franceinfo by Marc Fauvelle and Salhia Brakhlia.
“I’m going to ask you a question because everyone is asking it, at least those who love politics these days. Have you at least agreed on a pronunciation?”asks Marc Fauvelle. “We rather say Nupès”, Julien Bayou responds first while Jean-Luc Mélenchon on his side pronounces “Nups”.
“I say ‘Nupe’ and ‘Nupès'”, ends up admitting Julien Bayou. When it is pointed out to him that the pronunciation of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, “Nups”removes the “e” from ecology, the elected Green replies: “We didn’t agree on that.”
To avoid any confusion, it is perhaps preferable to speak of Left Coalition, Union of the Left and Ecologists or Common Banner, which seems, moreover, to suit Julien Bayou who concludes: “Only the Minister of the Interior does not understand that we want a common banner.”
