Ms. Plante was speaking, virtually, as part of a meeting of the Council of Europe, which brought together the mayors of many cities around the world.
“The City of Montreal strongly condemns this war. It is a violation of international law to which we will not turn a blind eye, ”she said, denouncing the Russian invasion.
For a month now, war has been raging in Ukraine, as Russian troops have invaded the country.
“I want to salute the courage and resilience you show every day. I can hardly imagine the weight resting on your shoulders, but I can assure you that our hearts are with you,” reiterated Ms. Plante.
The mayor also explained that the City is preparing for the possible arrival of refugees on its territory, assuring that they will be welcomed “with open arms”.
“Here in Montreal, although we are very far away, everything is deployed to provide assistance as we can,” she assured.
