Prohibiting hunting during weekends and school holidays is one of the points of the program of Yannick Jadot, candidate for Europe – Ecologies – The Greens for the 2022 presidential election. This Friday on BFM, he indicated that ‘he wanted “that we can walk in nature“, referring to the many hunting accidents affecting individuals. He notably took the recent example of a”walker who took a bullet next to a cemetery“Thursday in Haute-Savoie.
“Three quarters of people who live in rural areas do not dare to go for a walk on Sundays when there is gunfire, this is not normal“, protested the MEP. According to Yannick Jadot,”70% of hunters come from cities“, while “rurality is the pleasure of the countryside, being able to hike, cycle, walk with your dog without being afraid that he will be shot (that one shoots him, editor’s note) at the end of the road “.
In France, hunting is authorized every year during the fall and a large part of the winter. The precise dates may however vary according to the departments, the decision of the opening being up to the prefects. In 2000, a weekly day, Wednesday, without hunting was imposed at the national level. The measure was nevertheless abandoned in 2003, leaving however the possibility to the prefects of establishing one at the departmental level.
Prohibition of hunting with hounds and ritual slaughter without stunning animals
During his interview this Friday, Yannick Jadot reiterated his desire to ban hunting with hounds and all hunts “cruel“, denouncing their authorization by Emmanuel Macron, in his eyes”under the influence of hunting lobbies“. The environmental candidate has also indicated his wish to ban ritual slaughter, used for kosher and hallal meats.”No tradition justifies making animals suffer“, did he declare.
In the process, the entourage of Yannick Jadot clarified that the candidate did not want the outright ban on ritual slaughter but that the animals be stunned before the operation. On Twitter, the MEP added: “No misunderstanding about ritual slaughter. Each religion can have its traditions but no one can free themselves from the rules of animal welfare, in particular stunning“.
