“We tell them that a museum is sacred while they believe that we are ruining their future”. MEP Yannick Jadot justifies on franceinfo the action of young ecological activists.
The European deputy EELV Yannick Jadot affirms Monday, November 7 on franceinfo “understand perfectly” recent actions of environmental activists. “All civil disobedience is in principle non-violent, it has nothing to do with black blocks”argues the MEP questioned on road blockages, the interruption of certain sporting events and the degradation of several works of art in museums by environmental activists.

According to Yannick Jadot, civil disobedience takes place “in the name and for the right”. And the ecologist takes the case of Rosa Parks as an example: “When Rosa Parks in the 1950s sat down and was told these were places for white people, that was called civil disobedience and the law validated her action.” An example taken by the politician to explain what civil disobedience is which, according to him, “is built on the legitimacy that must be built on the right.”
Today, for Yannick Jadot, which is legitimate, “It’s the fight against climate change”even if he notes a generational difference in the modes of action. “I’m not from that generation, it’s true”, he admits, confident that he was “shocked at the start” through actions in museums. Today, Yannick Jadot sees these actions differently: “Basically, it comes from a despair of our youth.”
Actions carried out in museums are “exciting” for the MP: “We consider that it is almost sacred, a museum. It is the temple of culture. And they say that we are desacralizing their lives, that we are ruining their future but that at the same time, there are things sacred”. A contradiction for Yannick Jadot which can explain these actions: “You have to hear their despair. When there are young people who block a road to say that the amendment must be voted on in the National Assembly [sur la somme allouée à la rénovation thermique] be taken over by the government, this is not extremism”he concludes.
