“I hope there will be no excesses. I have always condemned violence”, declares Friday March 24 on franceinfo Yannick Jadot, MEP EELV, on the eve of a new mobilization prohibited in Sainte-Soline in Deux-Sèvres against the project of mega-basins. The Ministry of the Interior announced that 3,200 gendarmes and police officers would be mobilized this weekend to supervise the demonstration against the mega-basins in which between 7,000 and 10,000 people must participate, including 1,000 “ultras”.

“Aberrant projects”

The elected environmentalist believes that there is “permanently criminalizing environmental activists” who are sometimes “violated by pro-basins and pro-pesticides”. According to him, “All of this has to stop.” “Ecologists are not against irrigation, but these projects are totally aberrant today and call into question our access to drinking water.”

Yannick Jadot believes that his place is there: “My place is to defend water.” Asked whether it is a form of civil disobedience, he answers “Of course” and adds: “Today we need to put the general interest at the heart of our public policies.” According to him, the government “is in denial about the climate emergency”. Faced with this situation, he claims to take his “responsibilities to remember that water, everyone needs it before some corn farmers.”

The former presidential candidate is opposed to this project of “mega-basins.”

“These are reservoirs that will pump groundwater on astronomical quantities of water to the detriment of drinking water and aquatic environments, and this for an extreme minority of corn producers.”

Finally, questioned on the demonstrations in France against the pension reform, Yannick Jadot denounces a “absolutely dramatic and very worrying situation”. According to him, Emmanuel Macron “organizes police violence” And “block the country by taking the risk of setting it ablaze out of pride”. For him, only one solution: “He must withdraw this reform”.
