Yamaha XMAX 2022 | From A to B for peanuts

No need to be a connoisseur of the automotive world to know that the price of cars has exploded. And that the extinction of somewhat simplistic but accessible models is now practically complete. Too bad, because sometimes you just want to get from point A to point B. What if the solution to this sad problem was not a car, but rather a maxi scooter? With its tempting bill of $6999 and its meager 3 L per 100 km, the Yamaha XMAX brings an intriguing reflection on this subject.

Far from the mythical Vespa

The Yamaha XMAX (European model) is able to comfortably seat two adults and navigate the highway without issue.

Since the eyes of motorists more or less accustomed to motorcycle jargon will probably scan these lines, let us recall that a maxiscooter is a class of scooter distinguished by proportions and a cylinder capacity much larger than those of the “little Vespa” which inhabits the collective imagination. In the case of the Yamaha XMAX 2022, we are talking about a mount capable of comfortably accommodating two adults, of driving on the highway without problems thanks to an astonishing single-cylinder of 292 cc and of carrying an impressive amount of shopping or other luggage in a large trunk housed under the seat. A glove compartment and a small compartment for the telephone with 12 V charger increase the practicality of the XMAX.

The 300 that thinks it’s a 400

Once in the saddle on the Yamaha XMAX (European model), you feel on a mount of a superior class.

The manufacturers who offer maxiscooters on the North American market (these are vehicles mainly designed for the European market) have accustomed us to two formats: 400s which are sufficient to circulate very suitably and 650s (more or less) still larger ones offering significantly more fun power. With its 292 cc, the XMAX should, normally and logically, belong to a lower class both in terms of dimensions and performance. Except that once in the saddle, we have the pleasant surprise to discover ergonomics, performance, a level of equipment and even a finish resembling to be mistaken what a good 400 traditionally offers.

Cheap to buy, cheap after

The Yamaha XMAX is truly a godsend

The cost of living is rising so much that the very idea of anything “cheap” seems to have disappeared. However, the XMAX defies this new reality. As proof, there is first its more than reasonable price of $6,999 – plus taxes, of course. But, if you dig a little deeper, you can see that the sneaky surpluses that are becoming more and more common these days are nowhere to be found. Transport and preparation costs? $375. Additional costs related to the increase in fuel or other? $250. Four years of additional warranty? $557. Maintenance ? Minimal. Consumption ? Just over 3 L per 100 km, even after the torment inflicted by our tester.

A real scooter

No clutch, no gears to change at the wheel of the Yamaha XMAX (European model)

One of the mandatory features of a scooter is ease of use and here the XMAX delivers. It is easy to install by passing one leg in front of the huge and comfortable seat, the start (without key) is instantaneous and, thanks to the automatic transmission, a turn of the accelerator is enough to start. No clutch, no gears to change. Reasonable weight aids handling, while standard ABS adds a healthy dose of braking assurance. The instrumentation is as complete as it is elegant and we even have the right to the electric opening of the trunk (illuminated) and the glove box. Finally, as is typical with Yamaha, the finish is absolutely impeccable.

Ah! this trunk!

The volume under the seat of the Yamaha XMAX (European model) allows you to bring two or three good bags of groceries.

In the world of motorcycles where few models offer the space to carry a simple wallet, the storage volume of the XMAX is equivalent to a cave, since it is enough to accommodate two helmets with the remaining space. On a day-to-day basis, this volume makes it possible to bring two or three good bags of groceries, to drag additional equipment for rain or cold, to leave jackets and helmets locked when parking, etc. And for those who would still like to increase the storage volume or improve the protection against the elements, Yamaha offers a rear trunk and an oversized windshield in its catalog of accessories.

And the shortcomings?

The small engine of the Yamaha XMAX (European model) proves silky smooth and quite competitive in urban races vis-à-vis the motoring fauna, but on the highway it runs out of steam.

So, all beautiful and all pink, this XMAX? No. Its biggest shortcoming is probably the harshness of the suspensions on bad coating. The wheels having a relatively small diameter – which is normal on a scooter –, we quickly learn that it is really preferable to avoid the craters and other abominations which punctuate our roads. Moreover, if the small engine is silky and quite competitive in urban races vis-à-vis the automobile fauna, on the highway, it runs out of steam once the past 120 km / h. It’s still capable of over 130 km/h, but doesn’t have much in reserve after that.

Conclusion

The Yamaha XMAX (European model) is surprising…

The XMAX is a hidden secret that deserves to be revealed. Many would instinctively put it aside because of its relatively small displacement, which usually leads to poor performance and cramped ergonomics. But the model breaks these stereotypes in a remarkable way and adds more with a price that seems almost too low. Potential buyers should be aware that this is a vehicle requiring a motorcycle driver’s license in Quebec, which could be a significant barrier for those who do not already have one. But beyond this limit, the XMAX literally has the ability to replace the good old little car used for various daily trips. Well, except in winter…
