Hailing from the Bronx and championing the borough’s drill sound, young Ice Spice has gone from obscurity to the limelight in what seems like the snap of a finger, thanks to a handful of chart-topping songs. buzz on social media, then to a series of notable collaborations — including the duet Barbie World with Nicki Minaj and her remix of Taylor Swift’s song Karma, which earned her acclaim. Now comes her first album, an affair as dense as it is brief (ten songs of less than three minutes) that can be listened to like a mixtape, each song colliding with the next. His early accomplice, composer RiotUSA, provides musical direction for Y2K!giving a heaviness to the percussion that brings the sound of the Bronx closer to that of the London underground, and it is therefore no coincidence that the young British MC Central Cee offers a verse or two on the erotic Did it First. Although a bit predictable in his prosody, Ice Spice rides these rhythms with incredible assurance, his voice contrasting with the intensity of the musical productions.
