Xavier Dolan confirms that he will no longer direct films

At the heart of a media storm for two days, director Xavier Dolan made an update on his Instagram account on Friday evening: he will no longer be making films, but is keeping the door open to making TV series.

In a publication written in English, the Quebec director returns to his remarks widely publicized and quoted by the Spanish daily newspapers El País And El Mundo that he wants, in particular, to retire.

“I said that I wanted to stop making films, and I feel at peace with this decision,” writes the filmmaker. “I don’t want to make films anymore because they don’t make me happy. »

He nevertheless specifies that he is “currently involved in television projects” and that he intends to continue his commitments. He adds a little further that he “could make series”.

Dolan also returns to his most controversial comments cited by El Mundo : “art is useless and devoting oneself to cinema is a waste of time”. Several players in the cultural industry have taken offense to this quote in recent days.

“The first part of this sentence is a broad generalization, and the second, a pure invention,” claims Dolan, who disapproves of the way the daily quoted him.

The 34-year-old filmmaker specifies that he now wishes to devote himself to his health, his family, his friends and his “other passions”, while reiterating his love of art. “I believe that art offers a remedy for our suffocating realities and saves lives. »
