With more than three years to go before the deadline, everyone’s ambitions are now out in the open. The president of the Hauts-de-France region, Xavier Bertrand, announced Saturday February 3 in West France that he had “well intentioned” to stand as a candidate in the 2027 presidential election, in order, he says, to oppose the far right. “Yes, I have every intention of doing so. I have not changed my ambition. And I have learned from my mistakes”replied the elected Republican, when asked about his possible candidacy.

“Many today already think that 2027 will be Marine Le Pen’s turn. Not me!”

And to continue: “I am convinced that there is not a majority of fascists in our country but there is a majority of angry French people. I intend to respond to that when the time comes. So no, in 2027, it will not be the turn of the extreme right.”

Aged 58, Xavier Bertrand explains in West France want to defend a “Republic of the territories”. “The State, at the national level, must ensure the sovereign: security, justice, control of immigration, defense, fight against Islamism. But for everything that concerns daily life, let’s stop bringing decision-making back to Paris so that it returns late to the field”, he explains. In this interview, the elected official, who describes himself as “a man of the social right, Gaullist”, also denounces a government “too Parisian in the sense that it is impossible to look beyond the ring road, which explains its inability to anticipate crises, to feel what the French are experiencing.”
