Social network X has suspended its much-criticized use of its European users’ personal data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) program, according to a statement from the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) published on Thursday, August 8. The DPC is acting on behalf of the European Union (EU).
Elon Musk’s website used the personal data of its European users between May 7 and August 1, according to the DPC. It had taken the Irish court to court for violation of EU rules on data protection (GDPR).
Meta, for its part, had to suspend its project to use its users’ personal data in an artificial intelligence program in June, following complaints in 11 European countries. The Noyb association had thus asked the authorities to intervene “urgently” to prevent the implementation of this new privacy policy. It accused Meta of wanting to take all the data collected from its billions of users since 2007 to use it as part of a “Experimental AI technology without any limits”.
