New setback for women’s rights in the United States. Wyoming became, Friday, March 17, the first American state to ban the abortion pill, which constitutes a new victory for the conservatives who intend to reduce access to abortion in the United States. “I believe that all life is sacred and that every individual, including unborn children, should be treated with dignity and compassion”, State Governor Mark Gordon said Friday evening. The latter also called on lawmakers to go further, by enshrining a total ban on abortion in the Wyoming Constitution and submitting it to the vote of voters.

The decision comes at a time when many abortion opponents are seeking to ban the abortion pill nationwide, after the Supreme Court’s decision last year to bury the right to abortion at the federal. Since then, fifteen states have decided to ban all pregnancy terminations on their soil.
A ruling on this is also expected soon in court in Amarillo, Texas, where an ultra-conservative federal judge is set to rule on a possible federal ban on mifepristone (RU 486), the most widely used pill for medical termination of pregnancy. This judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk, could order it to be taken off the market nationwide.
