As of Thursday, May 5, the day of the overshoot, France has exhausted all of its natural resources. The WWF proposes a series of objectives to push back the date. The point on set, with the journalist Saada Soubane.
Thursday, May 5 marks the day of the overshoot in France, when the country has exhausted all of its natural resources. “If all humanity consumed like us, it would take 2.9 planets to meet our needs, and this until the end of the year”, explains journalist Saada Soubane, present on the set of 12/13. May 5, or “five months earlier than when it was first measured in 1961”, she says. However, it would be possible to move the date back. The WWF has set a five-year timeline.
“With ambition, we could push back this date by 25 days, if and only if we set specific objectives”, says the journalist. Among these objectives, to halve the use of pesticides, to have 25% of land cultivated organically, to carry out 700,000 renovations each year, or to use the bicycle in 15% of trips. The WWF offers to observe the evolution of certain emblematic animals or plants such as swallows or corals. “In addition to preserving the fauna and flora, pushing back the overshoot day would also prevent 28,000 human deaths linked to pollution”concludes Saada Soubane.
