To save money in public spending, the candidate for the second round of the presidential election Marine Le Pen intends “reserve family allowances for households in which at least one parent is French“, as she explained in December 2021. A measure which, according to her, would allow a saving of 15.6 billion euros over a five-year period. Where does this number come from? This amount theoretically saved comes from an estimate that assumes that immigrants receive on average more social benefits than the population as a whole.
INSEE has revealed that immigrants receive an average of 2,380 euros in social benefits per year, compared to 1,470 euros per year for the French. However, this does not allow Marine Le Pen to quantify possible savings. The candidate does not have precise data on which to rely, because this are not not public data. With regard to family allowances, for example, the candidate’s assessments could be overestimated by almost 30%.
