The president of the Union of Community Pharmacists Unions announced that nearly 4,000 medications are out of stock or at risk of being out of stock. Faced with this situation, some professionals have decided to manufacture these medications themselves.

In a Pharmacie of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), like almost everywhere in France, there is no plus a single box of an antibiotic that treats infections. Amoxicillin is nowhere to be found, and he’s not the only one. “The problem is that important drugs are missing”, indicates Valérie De Lécluse, president of the Pharmacists’ Union in Marseille. She was able to obtain one last box, which came from another pharmacy in Marseille, specializing in the manufacture of medicines.

A return to the old ways

In this laboratory attached to the pharmacy, all treatments out of stock are produced on request, with the authorization of the National Medicines Safety Agency, and the approval of the ARS. 350,000 amoxicillin capsules left this laboratory this year. And to cope with the market shortage, 50 preparers are manufacturing tirelessly, including on weekends. Over the past year and a half, production has increased by 30%.
