Anna Hasselborg’s Swedish quartet won gold at the 2018 Olympics and then bronze last month at the Beijing Games. He was also a two-time vice-champion at the Worlds.

The host country’s victory against a team that comes in third place in the world rankings has greatly helped Einarson in his quest for a bye to the playoffs.

“They’re part of the elite of curling in the world, so it’s a big win for us and it will give us a boost of confidence going forward,” Einarson said.

At the end of the day, Canada’s record was 6-2 with a win following Scotland’s withdrawal.

After two defeats, the Scots pulled out of the competition on Sunday after four players tested positive for COVID-19.

The teams in the top six places at the end of the preliminary round on Friday will advance to the playoffs.

Those who finish first and second will qualify for a bye directly to the semifinals on Saturday. The duels for the medals will be presented on Sunday.

Einarson led 5-0 after three ends and 8-2 after the fifth end. However, the Swedish skip orchestrated a comeback to force a 10and end.

Despite having possession of the hammer, Einarson did not need to deliver his last stone as Hasselborg failed to tie the score on his final throw.

“We definitely had to play well to beat them,” said Briane Meilleur, Canada’s No. 1 player. (Swedes) played very well in the second half of the game. So I’m glad we managed to hold on.

“It was good to get a small lead quickly in order to afford a small cushion. »
