World Series | A game without points or hits for the Astros

(Philadelphia) Four Houston Astros pitchers combined to go without a run or hit in a 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the World Series Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

Updated yesterday at 11:55 p.m.

Cristian Javier pitched the first six innings and he was followed to the mound by relievers Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly.

The four pitchers walked just three, had 14 strikeouts and struck out 18 in a row between the third and ninth innings. Javier had nine of 14 strikeouts.

Pressly forced JT Realmuto to ground ball to third baseman Alex Bregman, who relayed the ball to Yuli Gurriel at first base for the historic out.

The feat, the second of its kind in World Series history, also allowed the Astros to tie the series with two wins apiece. Game 5 is Thursday night in Philadelphia and Game 6 follows Saturday night in Houston.

The only other game without a run or hit in World Series history was in 1956, when Don Larsen of the New York Yankees threw a perfect game in Game 5 against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

In 2010, Roy Halladay, then with the Phillies, pitched a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Divisional Series, also at Citizens Bank Park.

It was the only other game without a run or hit in major league playoff history.

In addition to grabbing the ground ball that led to the final out of the game, Bregman hit the key hit of the game, a double good for two runs as the bases were all busy in the fifth inning.

That hit was the highlight of the Astros’ five-run push in that inning against starter Aaron Nola and reliever Jose Alvarado.
