World Junior | Hockey Canada changes the preparatory schedule

(Edmonton) Given the evolving epidemiological situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the Omicron variant, and in order to ensure the health and safety of participants and the entire community at the 2022 World Junior Championship, Hockey Canada has changed the pre-season schedule, which was slated to start on December 19.



The amended schedule has yet to be worked out, but there will be no pre-season game until Dec. 23, Hockey Canada officials said in a press release.

It is possible that games will take place on December 24. This new calendar will be available in the coming days.

In addition, Hockey Canada is suspending the sale of tickets for all preseason games. Ticket holders will receive information on their options once the preparatory schedule is announced.

The decision was made following extensive discussions between Hockey Canada, the International Ice Hockey Federation, the local organizing committee and the event’s medical advisory committee, as well as Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services. Alberta.

“It was a heart-wrenching and well-considered decision, and we understand that it is difficult for the players, coaches, support staff and fans,” said Scott Smith, President and COO of Hockey Canada. .

“However, our goal is to have a successful and safe event, and we will continue to take all necessary precautions to achieve this goal and award medals on January 5th,” he added.

A total of 11 games were scheduled for the pre-season schedule, with each team scheduled to play at least two games before the tournament kicks off on December 26.

The 2022 World Junior Championship kicks off with two clashes in Edmonton and Red Deer, including Canada’s opener against the Czech Republic at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The preliminary round concludes on New Years Eve, with the bronze and gold medal games taking place on January 5.
