World Junior Championship | Slovakia surprise victory against the United States

(Moncton) Peter Repcik had a goal and an assist, Simon Nemec had three assists and Slovakia beat the United States 6-3 on Wednesday in the preliminary round of the World Junior Championship.


Dalibor Dvorsky, Robert Baco and Montreal Canadiens prospect Filip Mesar scored 3:19 in the second period when Slovakia took control of the game.

Libor Nemec and Alex Ciernik, in an empty net, also hit the target for Slovakia. Adam Gajan made 33 saves.

Tyler Boucher scored twice for the United States, while Gavin Brindley also scored. Cutter Gauthier had two assists and Kaidan Mbereko stopped 20 shots.

Slovakia trailed 2-1 after the first period but toppled the Americans in the second period.

Repcik dealt a heavy blow to the Americans by widening the gap to 5-2 early in the third period.

Boucher replied on the power play and while Mbereko had been replaced by an additional striker. However, Ciernik delivered the final blow by scoring in an empty net late in the game.

Slovakia and the United States have three points each after two games in Group B. Switzerland and Finland lead them with four points each. Latvia brings up the rear with just one point.
