World Junior Championship | Finland claim a 5-2 win over Slovakia

Oliver Kapanen and Joakim Kemell both had a goal and an assist as Finland defeated Slovakia 5-2 in a Group B game at the World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship on Tuesday in Moncton.


The Finns scored three goals in the second period, including one by Jani Nyman. Sami Paivarinta and Brad Lambert also hit the target for the winners.

Goalkeeper Jani Lampinen made 22 saves for Finland (1-0-1), who were back in action the day after their astonishing 3-2 overtime loss to Switzerland.

Peter Repcik scored both goals for Slovakia, who were playing their first match of the tournament. Maxim Strbak assisted in both goals.

Patrik Andrisik started the game in front of goal for Slovakia and blocked 11 of 15 shots he faced in just under 34 minutes of action. Matej Marinov replaced him and he stopped seven pucks.

In another Group B game later on Tuesday, Latvia will face off against Switzerland.

In Halifax, in Group A duels, Sweden will face Germany and the Czech Republic will face Austria.

The Czech Republic will be looking for their second win in as many matches, following their unexpected 5-2 win over Canada on Monday night.

The Canadian team will play its second game of the tournament Wednesday night against Germany in Halifax.
