“We have to sound the alarm.” The objective of eliminating hunger by 2030 is dangerously far away, warned five international agencies working for food security, Wednesday, July 6 at the UN.

“The world is moving away from its goal of ending hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030”warns the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in reference to the UN’s sustainable development goal “Zero Hunger”.

“Between 702 and 828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021”, or about 9.8% of the world’s population, underline in a joint report the FAO, the International Fund for the Development of Agriculture (IFAD), Unicef, the World Food Program (WFP) and the World Organization health (WHO). This represents 46 million more people than in 2020, and 150 million more than in 2019.

More broadly, 2.3 billion people suffered from severe or moderate food insecurity at some point in 2021. This means that they did not have access to adequate food, or that they had difficulty feeding during certain periods.

By the end of the decade, some 670 million people are expected to still suffer from hunger, “a number similar to 2015”when this target has been set by the international community.

The five international organizations “pull the alarm signal” in front of “the intensification of the main drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition: conflicts, extreme climatic events and economic shocks”.
