World Hockey Championship | Switzerland surprises Finland 3-1 and will face Germany in the quarter-finals

(Prague) Kevin Fiala scored two goals and an assist in Switzerland’s 3-1 win over Finland on the final day of the preliminary round at the World Hockey Championship on Tuesday.


With this victory, Switzerland finishes second in Group A and will face Germany in the quarter-final round on Thursday. Switzerland won six of its seven preliminary round matches.

Andrea Glauser also hit the target for the Swiss. Nino Niederreiter collected two assists in the victory.

Jere Innala scored the goal for Finland.

Fiala opened the scoring 5:14 into the second period. He put the finishing touch at the end of the match to complete the score with his second goal.

With three wins in seven games, Finland finished fourth in Group A and will play Sweden.

In other Tuesday matches, Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield helped the United States defeat Latvia 6-3.

Caufield scored twice, in addition to obtaining two assists. The winger participated in his team’s first three goals, helping Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators open the scoring at 1:23 of play.

Latvia was outshot 43-30.

The Americans will face the Czech Republic in their quarterfinal match.

Led by captain Erik Karlsson, Sweden defeated Slovakia 6-1.

Karlsson found the back of the net and added two assists. Forward Joel Eriksson Ek scored twice, seeing Minnesota Wild teammate Filip Gustavsson turn away 17 shots.

Slovakia meets Canada on Thursday.

Great Britain defeated Austria 4-2 to finish the preliminary round with a victory.

Forward Wojciech Stachowiak had a goal and two assists in Germany’s 6-3 win over France.
