World Championship | Canada defeats Kazakhstan 6-3

(Helsinki) Adam Lowry broke the tie late in the first period, Dylan Cozens scored three goals and Canada gave themselves a scare Thursday at the World Hockey Championship, erasing two one-goal deficits before winning Kazakhstan 6-3.

Yegor Petukhov and Arkadi Shestakov gave Kazakhstan a 1-0 and then 2-1 lead early in the game, but Canada was able to turn things around.

Damon Severson had a goal and two assists and Drake Batherson had a goal and an assist for Canada. Ryan Graves and Kent Johnson each had two assists and Logan Thompson stopped 16 shots.

Kirill Savitski made it 4-3 in the third period, but Kazakhstan failed to complete the comeback. Andrei Shutov made 31 saves.

Graves did not finish the game for Canada. He was injured blocking a shot just before Savitski’s goal in the third period.

Canada (4-0-0-0) joined Switzerland (4-0-0-0) at the top of Group A. The two nations will meet on Saturday.

In the other Group A game on Thursday, Germany beat Denmark 1-0.

Both Group A matches started later than planned due to a minor fire at the Helsinki Arena ahead of the duel between Germany and Denmark.

On the Group B side, Kieffer Bellows scored twice and the United States beat Great Britain 3-0.

Ben Meyers also hit the target for the Americans, while Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell picked up two assists.

In the other game on the schedule, the Czech Republic hit the target five times in the first period en route to a 5-1 win over Latvia.

Tomas Hertl, David Pastrnak, Hynek Zohorna and Roman Cervenka all had a goal and an assist.

Sweden (3-1-0-0) and Finland (3-0-1-0) edge out USA (2-1-0-1) and Czech Republic (2-0-1-1) top of group B.

The first four teams in each group will advance to the next round.
