Work at the Rive-Sud wastewater treatment center | Longueuil residents invited to reduce their water use

Longueuil is asking its population to reduce its water use from January 30 to February 13, due to the latest work to replace the screens at the Center d’épuration Rive-Sud.

The City of Longueuil will replace its third and last bar screen at the South Shore Wastewater Treatment Center from January 30 to February 13, the municipality announced in a press release on Friday.

“This is the final step in replacing the wastewater pre-treatment equipment that is used to intercept the largest debris present in the water when it arrives at the plant located on Île Charron”, perhaps we read.

For the duration of the work, the wastewater treatment plant serving Boucherville, Brossard, Longueuil and Saint-Lambert will operate at two-thirds of its capacity.

This is “sufficient capacity to treat the amount of wastewater that usually arrives at the plant in dry weather, i.e. outside periods of mild spells, snowmelt or rain abundant, which is usually the case at this time of year, specifies the City. The dates of the work were strategically selected based on meteorological data. »

Residents are nevertheless asked to exercise restraint in their use of water during this period in order to minimize the risk of wastewater overflowing into the river.

Investing in infrastructure

The City of Longueuil plans to invest $13 million in 2023 to modernize equipment at the South Shore Wastewater Treatment Center. A total budget of $31 million is allocated over the next two years.

“Remember that it is [1 milliard de dollars] over 10 years which will have to be invested in order to modernize the drinking water and wastewater infrastructures and equipment on the territory of the agglomeration”, specifies the City.

“These investments are concrete actions taken by the Longueuil agglomeration to meet the needs of the growing population, while respecting current and future environmental standards,” said Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier in a press release. We are now asking for the support of the various levels of government to be able to continue to invest massively in our infrastructures, in particular to make our networks more resilient in the face of climate change. »
