Wood scores in overtime and the Avalanche win the first game against the Stars

Miles Wood scored on a backhander at 11:03 of overtime and the Colorado Avalanche, after trailing by three goals in the first period, beat the Dallas Stars 4-3 on Tuesday night in the first game of their second round series in the West.

Wood converted a counter-attack, outrunning defender Miro Heiskanen before beating Jake Oettinger.

In the playoffs, it was only the third time that the Avalanche closed a three-goal gap to win.

Cale Makar had a goal and two assists for Colorado, while Valerie Nichushkin had a goal and an assist.

Nathan MacKinnon scored the tying goal 39 seconds into the third period while uncovered to the left of the net.

Mikko Rantanen hit the post midway through the third period.

Alexander Georgiev made 19 saves, earning his fifth straight start.

After nine shots in the first half, Dallas had just seven shots the rest of regulation time. The team took six shots in overtime.

Jake Oettinger stopped 22 shots. He had allowed two goals or fewer in six consecutive games.

Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who again lost at home in a series opener. The Vegas Golden Knights played the trick on them in the first round.

Ryan Sutter and Wyatt Johnston also scored.

The second game will take place Thursday evening, once again in Dallas.
