Women’s hockey: Canadians crush Swiss in Beijing

Canada crushed Switzerland with a 12-1 victory in the preliminary round of the Olympic women’s hockey tournament in Beijing on Thursday.

The Canadians dominated the game from the start, as Sarah Fillier quickly opened the scoring, inaugurating a festival of goals, including three in the first period.

Goalkeeper Anne-Renée Desbiens performed well, especially in the second period, making a spectacular save, while Canada more than doubled the lead, adding five more goals.

It was during this second period that forward Mélodie Daoust had to leave the ice because of a shoulder injury that almost froze the Canadian hockey players, while the match was one-sided.

Canada only confirmed their dominance in the third period, putting the puck in the opposing net four times, while Switzerland’s Lara Stalder managed to score an honor goal.

In the next Group A game, Canada will face Finland on Saturday.
