Only 8% of conductors are women, even though the revolution is underway and talents are emerging. Musicians from all over the world compete during the weekend at the Philharmonie de Paris, for the “La Maestra” competition.
One is Polish, the other American. They are among the rare female conductors around the world and compete in the “La Maestra” competition, which is held every two years in Paris. In their country, they are substitute conductors. The competition could change lives. “It can potentially propel our careers, and it would give us visibility around the world”confides Deanna Tham.
Technique, interpretation and relationship with musicians
In total, 14 candidates are in competition. For Martyna Zych, 26, it was just a dream a few years ago. Today, the musician finally feels legitimate to conduct a large orchestra. “It’s not an accident that I’m here. I didn’t just lie in bed dreaming, it was such work every day”, she says. Directing an orchestra is like creating a character, right down to choosing the outfit.
The conductors have 25 minutes to convince. The candidates are judged on their technique, interpretation and their relationship with the musicians. At the initiative of the competition, the great conductor Claire Gibault, whose career has not been spared by sexism. “My desire is that many women feel legitimate to become conductors and dare”she explains.
