As the Ukrainian army weakens, civilians could soon be sent to the front. Some are already training in combat and shooting near kyiv.
Russian troops have recaptured the town of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, illustrating the current difficulties of the Ukrainian army which is short of ammunition and soldiers. Civilian women could be called to the front. Near kyiv, training has already started. They are computer scientists or students and they have decided to take up arms while the war against Russia drags on.
“It’s a sacrifice”
“I have come to acquire the skills to be ready, in case the mobilization of women is decided soon”, explains Kateryna, marketing manager. She has come to terms with the idea that she will risk her life if she is called to the front. “It’s a sacrifice but the more I train here, the more I accept that I could die on the front.” The Ukrainian army today has 60,000 women, or 23% of the force.
