In its annual report on poverty, Secours catholique is concerned about a situation that is deteriorating in France, partly because of inflation. More than a million people were supported by the association in 2022. Single mothers are particularly exposed.

Through deprivation, a single mother ended up pushing open the doors of a solidarity association, at first reluctantly, “embarrassed“, “uncomfortable“.”And then, now, it’s actually my home“, she testifies. With inflation and without a job, it is impossible for her to provide alone for the needs of her son, who has a disability. “I couldn’t do it anymore, I needed help with everything. To eat, to talk with people…“, she confides.

62% of women supported in arrears situation

The latest report on poverty from Secours catholique, unveiled on Tuesday November 14, reveals that women are on the front line facing precariousness. The association supported more than a million people last year, especially active women, whether employed or unemployed. Among them, 28% express a need for help to pay bills and 62% find themselves in arrears. Single mothers are also increasingly insecure. Almost a third of them have a job, most often precarious, with a monthly income of 583 euros on average.
