A man was arrested in Paris early Monday afternoon, suspected of having killed his wife and dismembered her body, franceinfo learned Tuesday, July 9 from the Niort (Deux-Sèvres) prosecutor’s office. A search warrant had been issued against him, he has since been taken into custody for “murder of a spouse”. The Niort prosecutor’s office also indicates that it has relinquished the investigation to the criminal division of the Poitiers prosecutor’s office.

According to a source close to the case at franceinfo, the police showed up on Saturday at the home of a woman who was a victim of domestic violence in Niort because she had not given any sign of life for a week. When the police arrived in front of the apartment, they came across a man who was on the landing of the apartment. In a bag he was carrying, the police discovered the body parts of a woman.

This man, again from a source close to the case, was taken into custody and explained that he had been contacted by the victim’s partner. The latter asked him, according to the account of the man taken into custody, to retrieve a bag and put it in a cellar. This man was released after being cleared of any wrongdoing.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday afternoon at the Poitiers forensic institute to confirm the identification of the body and determine the causes of death, reports France Bleu Poitou. The Poitiers public prosecutor, for his part, tells France Bleu that he will communicate initial information at the end of the day.
