A woman was sentenced to eight days of detention by a Russian court on Wednesday March 20 for writing “No to war” on her presidential ballot, which resulted in the re-election of Vladimir Putin.

This woman “took a ballot paper and wrote ‘No to War’ on the back with a red marker, after which she placed the ballot paper in the ballot box”, the Dzerzhinsk district court of St. Petersburg, the country’s second city, said in a statement.

The court considered that the defendant had in this way “degraded state property and discredited the Russian armed forces” and sentenced her to a fine of 40,000 rubles (around 400 euros) and eight days of administrative detention.

Vladimir Putin was re-elected on Sunday with a very large score which was denounced as “no connection with reality” by the opposition in exile. Opposition supporters nevertheless managed to show themselves by gathering at the same time, Sunday at noon, at polling stations, which led to long queues in some places, notably in front of Russian embassies abroad. .
