Manhandled by Aston Villa, Manchester United managed to qualify for the round of 16 of the FA Cup (1-0) on Monday and will face Middlesbrough (Championship) in early February. After the first defeat under the orders of Ralf Rangnick, against Wolverhampton (1-0), a week ago, this match will not necessarily reassure on the form of the Red Devils.

The performance of Marcus Rashford, preferred for once to Cristiano Ronaldo, was hardly convincing, while he is slow to find all of his means after several physical glitches.

The match had started well, however, with a determined team, which opened the scoring on a header from Scott McTominay, ideally served by Fred, on a center (1-0, 8th). But as all too often in a season and a half, United then began to step back and try to manage their advantage.

A very risky tactic against the Villans who created several very clear chances by John McGinn (19th), Emiliano Buendia (27th), Jacob Ramsey (31st) and especially Ollie Watkins, who found David De Gea’s crossbar after an error by Victor Lindelöf (30th). In the second half, Villa even had two goals refused by Ings (54th), after a long recourse to the VAR, then by Watkins (59th), to which Mason Greenwood only answered fifteen minutes from the end.

Ironically, Manchester will find Aston Villa this weekend for the 22nd day of the Premier League in a match where they will absolutely have to take points so as not to lose ground on the first four places, qualifying for the Champions League .
