The commemorations of May 8, 1945 mark the victory of the allies over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. Commemoration ceremonies took place all over France. In Paris, it is the head of state, freshly invested, who chaired them.

The day after his inauguration, Sunday May 8, a solemn moment for Emmanuel Macron. Under the Arc de Triomphe, he revives the flame of the unknown soldier and presides over the commemoration ceremony on May 8. After the minute of silence, the Marseillaise is sung by the choirs of the French Army. The President then greets the veterans. A few minutes earlier, the car of the Head of State goes up the Champs-Élysées, escorted by the Republican Guard.

The public is making a comeback. Last year, crowds were banned due to a pandemic, and two years ago France was in full confinement. With the war in Ukraine at the gates of Europe, these commemorations take on a completely different echo. “Everyone can contribute a little bit by giving these ceremonies always a lot of importance”, said a spectator. A commemoration also an opportunity for Emmanuel Macron to review troops present in many theaters of operations.
