Presidential election in Russia: with the “Noon against Putin” operation, has the call for Navalny been heard?
(FRANCEINFO)
During this presidential election period in Russia, the “Noon against Putin” operation aimed to gather in polling stations at noon, as a sign of protest and support for Alexeï Navalny.
Yulia Navalnaya, in exile in Berlin (Germany), was queuing at noon in front of the Russian embassy on Sunday March 17. His goal: to vote for any candidate other than Vladimir Putin. A few days earlier, the widow of Alexeï Navalny, who pledged to continue her husband’s fight, had invited Russians to demonstrate their opposition to Putin in this way.
“We must take advantage of election day to show that we exist and that there are many of us, […] that we are against Putin: you must go to the polling stations on the same day at the same time, March 17 at noon”, she declared.
A call heard
After Yulia Navalnaya’s call for protest, numerous anti-Putin demonstrations took place, notably in London (United Kingdom) and Berlin. Others in Russia went to the grave of Alexei Navalny to pay new respects to the deceased political opponent.
