Joe Musgrove pitched seven innings for the first time since July 4 and the San Diego Padres defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Sunday.
Musgrove (3-2) improved to 4-0 against the Blue Jays, who selected him in the first round of the 2011 draft. The right-hander allowed a home run to Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement, but is pretty well out of the woods. He allowed three runs and five hits.
“I never want to lose, but I feel like there’s a little something more against the team that drafted me,” Musgrove said. I was excited to be with them and wanted to make my debut with the team, but I didn’t get the chance. »
Musgrove was traded to the Houston Astros in 2012 and made his major league debut against the Blue Jays on August 2, 2016.
The Padres ended a three-game losing streak and stopped the Blue Jays from getting their first sweep of the season.
Musgrove was helped by two defensive plays by Fernando Tatis Jr., who made a sliding catch in the second inning and another jumping catch in the eighth.
“The usual greatness of his talent,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt.
“It’s part of the job. This is why we continue to work hard. We take nothing for granted, added Tatis. When you’re in the game, you try to play defense for the pitcher on the mound. »
The Dominican with braids was also nicknamed “Air Tatis” for his jumps and catches.
” It’s extraordinary. It’s an adrenaline rush that you can’t really explain in words. These little moments make all the hard work pay off,” Tatis said.
Robert Suarez pitched in the ninth inning and recorded his seventh save in 2024.
Xander Bogaerts, who has struggled since signing with the Padres as a free agent before the 2023 season, slammed a long ball at the expense of Chris Bassitt (2-3) to tie the game 2-2.
Bogaerts drew a walk while the cushions were all occupied in the eighth inning. Tatis followed with a sacrifice.
Shildt noted that Bogaerts seemed to be getting out of trouble.
“He’s practically there,” argued the Padres manager.
The San Diego squad took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases against Bassitt and reliever Trevor Richards. She scored when Luis Campusano drew a walk.
The Blue Jays threatened in the third inning, with Justin Turner and Daulton Varsho in scoring position. Turner crossed the plate after a Schneider groundout, but Musgrove retired Danny Jansen.
Schneider hit a homer in the second inning, his third of the campaign, to tie the game 1-1. That slap came just one batter after Tatis made a sliding catch off Varsho.
Tatis also made a jumping catch to rob George Springer of a hit in the eighth inning.
Clement started the third set by catapulting a shot from Musgrove to the second balcony in left, giving Toronto a 2-1 lead.
The Padres opened the scoring in the first inning, following an error by Springer.
Bassitt gave up four runs, two earned, six hits and three walks in five and a third innings of work.
