With “Don’t Worry Darling”, the pop megastar Harry Styles settles on the big screen

Highly anticipated, Don’t Worry Darling hits theaters Wednesday, September 21. VShe second feature film by director Olivia Wilde, of which Styles is the companion, was one of the event films of the Mostra at the beginning of September. Tdystopian thriller set in 1950s America, Don’t Worry Darling is a kind of Truman Showbrought up to date and influenced by the cinema of Night Shyamalan or black-mirrora nightmarish series about the future and technology.

Florence Pugh, notably known for playing The Daughters of Dr. March, black widow, plays Alice, a young woman well in all respects living in Victory, a small model town built in the middle of the desert by a mysterious businessman, played by Chris Pine. Like all her neighbours, Alice has a life regulated like clockwork, and, a priori, everything to be happy alongside Jack (Harry Styles), her companion, who leaves every morning for a job she knows nothing about.

In exchange for this material well-being, Victory has only one rule: its inhabitants must never leave the city limits. A taboo that Alice will soon break, at her own risk…“Everything is a metaphor, the paradox of Victory is that everything that is beautiful is also sinister”, had explained Olivia Wilde during the Venice festival. This entertainment “is like a Trojan horse” which must make the spectators think, added the director, who wanted to address the question of power and its abuse, the relationships of domination of men over women or the consequences of the material comfort of some on the lives of others. .

His actor and companion Harry Styles is not totally new to the cinema, and had notably held one of the soldier roles in Dunkirk by Christopher Nolan (2017). But the one who will soon have the leading role in My Policemanon Amazon Prime Video, certainly intends to climb a level with this new film. “I don’t want to think too much about the future”he said, when asked about the possibility of combining music and cinema. “Making music is very personal”, while on the contrary, in the cinema “we pretend to play someone else, and that’s what’s fun”he continued.

Florence Pugh, she had not taken part in the press conference of the film, the production of which was surrounded by many rumors and controversies: the first male role had in particular been attributed to Shia Labeouf before falling to Harry Styles. “When it comes to endless tabloid gossip and all the noise around us, the internet feeds itself”had previously evacuated the director. “I don’t need to contribute to it”.
