With “Black Adam”, the superheroes of DC Comics miss their change of course

Behind the many battles waged by superheroes, whose films are multiplying on the big screen, there is the standoff between DC Films and Marvel to build fan loyalty through their respective cinematic universes (film sequels in which the destinies of different superheroes intersect). In this context, black adamthe new DC Films production in theaters on Wednesday October 19, was expected at the turn.

Several novelties presented in the blockbuster were to reboost the DC cinematic universe, which has lost ground against Marvel in recent years. But the bet is globally missed by the director Jaume Collet-Serra, who preferred a deluge of special effects to an introspection of his anti-hero.

In the ancient city of Kahndaq, several millennia before our era, the slave Teth Adam had received superpowers from the gods to free his people from a tyrant. But he used it for revenge and ended up in prison. Five millennia later, when he has been liberated, he brings his very dark conception of justice to the modern city of Kahndaq, which resembles a city in the Middle East today.

Refusing to surrender, Teth Adam, who becomes Black Adam, must face a new band of superheroes, the Justice Society. The latter, which includes Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone, is brought to the screen for the first time by DC Films, which wants to add new blood to its galaxy of superheroes.

With Black Adam, DC Films suggests that adding new characters and superpowers to the catalog of its cinematic universe is enough to win over fans. For two hours, the anti-hero embodied by Dwayne Johnson therefore plays his fists to beat up the henchmen of the Intergang, a multinational that plunders eternium, a mineral present in the basement of Kahndaq.

But if the director Jaume Collet-Serra spectacularly stages the powers of Black Adam, he forgets to explore the personality of this anti-hero, who hesitates between breaking everything and helping his new friends – the members of the Justice Society. In the space of a few jokes and a duel in the form of a nod to the western genre, Black Adam therefore changes sides. It would have taken more flaws, more digging into his past and more nuance to the character played by Dwayne Johnson to come up with something convincing.

Only consolation, the Justice Society and its cohort of superheroes is rather convincing and we can’t wait to see Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Dr. Fate (played by a delicious Pierce Brosnan), and Cyclone who carry more of the DNA of the DC comics: humor, superpowers and human flaws.
