2023 was the hottest year on record. The mercury is panicking, particularly in Latin America, where a record for felt temperature was broken in Rio de Janeiro with 62°C.

The iconic beach of Ipanema (Brazil) has rarely been so crowded. A lot of swimmers were looking for a little freshness. With the humidity, the temperature felt in Rio de Janeiro reached a record 62.3°C during the weekend of March 16 and 17. Unable to escape the heatwave, many took shelter by the sea.

Extreme weather due to climate change

Experts attribute this extreme weather to climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, which is currently affecting Latin America. A maximum of 42°C was expected on Sunday March 17. The heat wave also hit São Paulo, the largest city in South America, where 34°C was recorded. The temperature has never been so high since the start of measurements by the Brazilian National Institute 80 years ago.
