The start of the school year is expected to be tense in hospitals. There will be fewer interns, those sixth-year medical students who work in hospital departments. In detail, only 7,974 positions are open, or 1,510 fewer positions compared to 2023. There are fewer positions available because fewer candidates have taken the competitive exams. The new reform of the second cycle of health studies has frightened many students, who have preferred to repeat the year.
Anger is rising among students. In a petition, they are asking for the positions to be reopened. It has more than 11,000 signatures to date. Some specialties are more penalized than others. There are half as many positions in cosmetic surgery. Ophthalmology, general medicine and emergency medicine are also affected. To compensate for the absence of interns, the State is already considering using doctors with special status, particularly those trained abroad.
